2008 Dietetic Interns Graduation — (05/30) The MUSC dietetic intern class of 2008 concluded their internship with a graduation ceremony at Harper Student Wellness Center on May 17th.
Do You Know Your Numbers? — (05/27) Magazines and other media sources are constantly churning out advice on the latest fad diets, exercise programs, or ways to lose ten pounds. Although achieving an ideal body weight and healthy exterior does play a role in reducing risk for chronic disease, so does maintaining a healthy interior.
Nutrition Symbols – Friend or Foe? — (05/20) Nutrition Information has recently gone beyond the nutrition facts panel. For years, the health conscious would flip over the box to extract the information they wanted to see. Lately, the consumer does not even have to search beyond the front panel.
Nutrition-Related Legislature — (04/29) It is easy to see that health issues are an important topic in politics, especially with the 2008 elections right around the corner .... As a project, the MUSC dietetic interns chose to support a variety of potential new topics appearing before Congress this year.
Good Health Southern Style — (04/23) The lifestyle choices we make each day are the foundation of good health. The DASH diet stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. It is an eating plan for good overall health.
Nutrition-Related Legislature — (04/22) It is easy to see that health issues are an important topic in politics, especially with the 2008 elections right around the corner. These topics range from payment- and insurance-related issues to stem cell research. In one way or another, upcoming decisions about legislation will affect our lives.

One Woman's Desire to Become an Ironman — (12/04) After taking up running as a form of exercise in 2005, Janet Carter, a MUSC clinical dietitian, made the decision in 2006 that she wanted to become an Ironman.
Dietitian Wins at Annual Event — (11/30) Congratulations to English Barbour, RD, CNSD who won the “Dietitians Reaching Above & Beyond“ contest sponsored by Sodexho.
CF Clinic Program Gets Assistance From Wal-Mart — (10/12) Not all problems associated with children's weight regards obesity. A problem for some is they cannot gain enough weight to sustain healthy growth.
Diebetic Children Have Fun-Filled Week at Camp Adam Fisher — (8/22) Camp Adam Fisher, South Carolina’s largest camp for children with diabetes, was held during the week of July 29 - August 4.
Scrub Color Identifies Roles — (7/05) The Medical University Hospital recently implemented a new dress code policy in an effort to help patients, visitors and others identify the health care provider and their role.
Dietitians Barbour and Nance Share Excellence Award — (6/15) Congratulations to English Barbour, RD and Laura Nance, RD who received the Sodexho CEO Marketplace Excellence Award.
Future Leaders Internship Program — (6/13) In an effort to develop our future leaders of tomorrow, the MUSC Dietetic Services department is hosting the first Future Leadership Internship program.
MUSC Dietitian Wins Award — (6/12) Tonya Shipman, RD was recently awarded the Emerging Dietetic Leader Award by the SC Dietetic Association during the 2007 spring conference.
Mary Basel Co-Authors Parenteral Nutrition Article for Journal — (3/29) Mary Basel, RD, with the assistance of Chris Bannister, RD, Amanda Budak, RN and Dr. Mark DeLegge, authored an article that appeared in the April 2007 issue of Nutrition in Clinical Practice.
South African Meetings Attended by Dr. DeLegge — (3/28) Earlier this month, during the week of March 12-16, Dr. Mark DeLegge traveled to South Africa to participate in two international meetings on nutritional critical illnesses.
Mark DeLegge Named New DDC Director — (2/21) After an extensive national search, Pat Cawley, MD, Chief Medical Officer, has appointed Mark DeLegge, MD,
as the new medical director for the Digestive Disease Center.
Mark DeLegge Co-Authors New Book — (2/13) MUSC’s very own Dr. Mark DeLegge has just recently completed a new book that should prove to be a wonderful resource that every home healthcare worker will want to have on hand.
National Nutrition Month — (2/9) The theme for 2007's National Nutrition Month in March is to be 100% Fad Free. You can lose weight on virtually any diet, but the real key to reaching long-term goals is to focus on your overall health.
What's Happening in Nutrition on the State and Local Level? — (1/31) Many nutrition-related directives have been established in South Carolina over the past four years. Starting in 2003, Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), the University of South Carolina (USC) and South Carolina Research Authority (SCRA) launched a collaboration to focus on innovative research initiatives and outreach programs related to nutrition.

English Barbour to Present Posters in Arizona — (12/01) English Barbour, RD, CNSD, will be presenting two posters at the annual American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) conference in Phoenix, AZ in January.
MUSC Grabs Four Awards at Annual Dietetics Meeting — (10/31) MUSC is very proud to announce that three of our dietitians and one of our dietetic interns received state awards during the South Carolina Dietetic Association Annual meeting that was held in Myrtle Beach in October.
Dietitian Wins Trip to Hawaii — (7/31) Debbie Petitpain, MS, RD has been chosen as the top entry in the southeast region for the "RDs Reaching Above And Beyond" contest, sponsored by Sodexho, with the grand prize of a trip to Honolulu, HI for the American Dietetic Association's Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo in September.
Welness Wednesdays — (2/23) To promote health and well-being amoung MUSC employees and staff, an employee wellness initiative is underway. One of the new health promotion programs is “Wellness Wednesdays.”
“Step Up to Nutrition and Health” During National Nutrition Month — (2/17) “Step Up to Nutrition & Health” is the theme for this year’s National Nutrition Month. Being physically active and making healthy food choices everyday can affect how you feel.
2005
World Food Day Teleconference — (9/21) A World Food Day USA teleconference is scheduled to take place on October 14, 2005. The teleconference is a three-hour telecast presented each year to engender year-around concern and involvement on ending hunger.
Medically Fragile — (9/01) A nationally acclaimed program that provides superior health care to South Carolina's most needy children and saves the state money is opening in Charleston.
Promoting Patient Satisfaction — (6/10)The patient ambassador position was recently added to take customer service to a higher level. Oftentimes, patient complaints are not recognized or corrected until after the patient leaves.
Dietetic Internship a Success for Eight Graduates — (6/01) On May 14, eight individuals completed their ten month-long Dietetic Internship. After graduating with a BS in Dietetics, this internship is essential to becoming a Registered Dietitian (RD) and working in the clinical setting, both inpatient and outpatient.
Women's History Month — (3/14) Since Women’s History Month and National Nutrition Month are both in March, efforts were made to promote the two celebrations together.
Every Step Counts — (3/08) Dust off your pedometer because “Every Step Counts” is back by popular demand. Last year, over 15,000 miles were logged by participants of the “Every Step Counts” participants. This year, MUSC is going the extra mile to ensure that more employees get involved with the program and get moving!
Get a Taste for Nutrition — (3/07) “GET A TASTE FOR NUTRITION” is the theme for National Nutrition Month. Variety is the key to enjoying food and to good nutrition and health. Add more nutrition and eating pleasure by expanding your range of food choices. Be adventurous and explore new foods and flavors.
Healthy New Year!! — (1/31) The MUSC 2005 Health and Wellness Expo attracted more than 2,000 participants interested in learning more about 60 MUSC health programs through wellness demonstrations and health screenings. Nutrition was one of the many health programs offered. Participants were lured to the nutrition booth by a large “Healthy New Year!” banner.
Wellness and You — (1/05) Wellness & You is a nutrition lifestyle and educational program designed to provide ongoing health and wellness information as well as a variety of health food choices.

Former Dietetic Intern Presents Research at National Meeting — (10/25) Nicole Moore, registered dietitian, presented the research she completed while an intern at MUSC at the Food and Nutrition Conference and Exposition in Anaheim, California, October 3.
Camp Helps Children Manage an “Adult” Disease — (10/01) The prevalence of diabetes in South Carolina is one of the highest rates in the country. As the U.S. pediatric obesity epidemic continues to worsen, a growing number of children are developing Type-2 diabetes, a form that is generally diagnosed in adults.
Neonatal Nutrition Training Program — (8/31) MUSC is now offering a Neonatal Nutrition Training program. The program is designed to give practical information and tools to dietitians who have had minimal or no experience providing nutrition services in a neonatal intensive care unit.
Mary Joan Oexmann Retiring After 30 Years At MUSC — (6/29) Mary Joan Oexmann, MS, RD began her career at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in 1974 after completing her education at the University of Kentucky.
Children’s Hospital Promotes Healthy Lifestyle — (6/22) The incidence of childhood obesity, heart disease, and hyper-tension are increasing at alarming rates. The Children’s Hospital promotes healthy lifestyles through the new Heart Health program.
Dietetic Intern to Participate in Expo 2004 — (5/18) Nicole Moore has been selected to participate in the American Dietetic Association’s Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo 2004 Research Poster Session.
MedGem — (2/18) If you wonder why some people can eat a box of doughnuts and not gain an ounce, but if you look at a doughnut, you gain weight, the answer may be your "metabolic rate" (or the rate you burn calories).
International Nutrition Support Training — (2/09) A practicing dietitian from Singapore, who was awarded an Overseas Nutrition Support Fellowship, chooses MUSC to continue his studies.
