Approximately 17 million people in the United States – that's approximately
6% of the total U.S. population – have diabetes. Per capita, South
Carolina has the second highest number of people with diabetes
in the country. Diabetes is characterized by high levels of blood sugar.
It results from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both
with the prevalence increasing with age. Diabetes can be associated with
serious complications and premature death. People with diabetes can take
steps to control their diabetes and possibly lessen the risk of complications
through proper nutrition, exercise, and/or diabetes medications.
